Halloween Punch

This would be a great addition to a Halloween party for any age group!

116 frozen hand

It comes from a tutorial from Lygenia Grace at Simply Stated. The idea is to fill a surgical glove with water, freeze it, and then use it in place of ice cubes in the party punch.

I think you could add onto this by filling the glove with cranberry juice or by adding green or purple food colour to the water in the glove. Either would add a creepy colouring to the floating hand.

Maple Leaf Roses

In keeping with the fall spirit, I've been making roses our of the fallen maple leave in our backyard. They are really quick and easy and make wonderful centerpieces.

Here are the ones that I've made so far! Each one I make seems better than the last, so its only up hill from here...

Mermaid Nails

I decided to give the new gradient glitter trend a try and here is the result!

The Products:

  • Base and Top Coats
  • A solid background colour (I used Khaki by Joe Fresh)
  • A generic sparkle polish ( I used White Sparkles by Sally Girl)

How To:
1. Paint Base Coat.
2. Paint a solid background colour. This may take multiple coats, so make sure to let each coat of this colour dry fully before the next.
3. Brush the tips of your nails with Sparkle polish as though you were painting a french manicure.
4. Add a coat of the Base Coat clear polish ontop and before it dries, add another coat of sparkles to the tips. As you do this, lightly drag the sparkle down allowing it to taper off towards towards the cuticle.
5. Finish off the nails with a Top Coat.

Birthday Cake: Ivy Vines

For my mothers birthday this year, I gave fondant cake decorating another try! This time I opted for a Glucose Based Fondant because my mother has commented that my previous Marshmallow-Based Fondants have been too sweet.

Glucose Based Fondant
2 Egg Whites
Roughly 1Kg Icing Sugar
2 Tbs. Glucose (warmed)

Directions (Super Simple!)
1. Combine egg whites and slowly mix in sifted icing sugar.
2. When the mixture becomes too thick to work with, add in the heated glucose. 
3. If you wish to make colour fondant, add the colour and kneed it into the dough now. 
4. There you have it! The dough cam be rolled to cover your cake as a sheet or may be shaped to form decorations.

Note: Do NOT store the fondant in the fridge. If you have made it ahead of time, store it by wrapping it in plastic wrap and putting it in an airtight container.

Things that I've learnt:

1. This type of fondant dries much faster and is less flexible than Marshmallow Fondant. So it is more difficult to roll out into a sheet to drape over the cake. But at the same time, this makes it easier to form stiffer shapes, such as the ivy vines and leaves pictured above.

2. Icing Colouring creates much richer colours than Food Colouring. It is normally available at cake decorating stores and the Bulk Barn.

Nails: Fall Leaves

The Polish

You will need:
- Base and Top Coats
- A white or neutral polish for the background (not pictured above)
- Yellow, Green, and Red polishes for leaves. Note: Orange Polish would be an asset if you have it, or else you can mix the yellow and red polishes together as you are stamping the leaves.
- A Nail Art Pen, for those of us who do not have super steady hands.

The "How-To"

1. Paint a solid colour over all nails. I used a creamy white colour for my example.
2. Using the Nail Art Pen, draw on silhouettes of tree branches. I find that short straight lines appear more realistic than curling ones.

3. Add dots of green, yellow, orange, and red polish to branches as leaves. To do this I place drops of each colour onto a plastic surface (I used the back of a membership card, you can always use polish remover on it afterwards!). Then using a toothpick or the end of a dulled pencil, make dots along the silhouette branches.

4. Finish with a top coat of polish to smooth out any rough edges and then bribe someone to help you out with your other hand!

Things that I've learnt:
1. Doing your nails while typing up study notes really works. Paint a coat of polish, type a page, paint a coat of polish (you get the pattern..)
2. If you paint polish outside of the lines, don't worry! Let your nails dry and then wash your hands in warm water. As you are washing, use your nails to press down along your cuticles of the opposite hand. The excess nail polish should peel off easily! (This also works well if you jump in the shower)

Sock Buns

Recently, a lot of tutorials have been popping up online about how to do sock buns and how, using the same method, to curl your hair.

I've always been plagued with thin hair. No matter how long I grew it, it never seemed to fulfill my daydreams of the perfect little ballerina bun. Then along came the "Sock Bun" and changed everything...

Loepsie has been kind enough to post an awesome sock bun decoding tutorial on YouTube that I highly recommend.

Just to prove that the method does work, here is my version of the bun, (after my first stab at it)! It is a little bit messy but I think that that makes it look softer and more comfortable.

Things that I've learnt:

1. It is best if you can pick a sock in a color similar to your hair. I chose to use an extra black sock that had lost its mate in a washing machine battle.

2. The bun will feel very loose at first. As you are rolling the sock down your hair, slide it back upon itself causing the wrapped hair to tighten. This will form an overall tighter bun.

Birthday Cake - Tiffany's Style

Recently, a close friend of mine celebrated her 21st Birthday. So a group of her friends organized a surprise party. We had all been living in different cities for the summer and it was really nice to be able to get back together and catch up.

As a student (and being me), most of my presents are hand made and what better way of celebrating a birthday than with cake in my friends favorite color (my attempt at Tiffany's Blue)! It was a milk chocolate cake with a layer of fudge icing covered in butter cream and marshmallow fondant.

 (I apologize for the poor photography work and cropping!)

In my family, we have a tradition that the birthday person must make the first cut into the birthday cake and make a wish at the same time. BUT they cannot remove the knife from the cake,

Things that I have learnt from making this cake:
  • Do not store pre-made fondant in the fridge. It tends to attract condensation and becomes sticky. This, in turn, requires you to add more icing sugar and then will become harder to work with.
  • As you may have noticed, the bow on this cake is looking a little bit tired. It has been suggested to me that using gum paste or adding gum paste to the fondant would create a better material for the bow and would prevent it from drooping.
